Nothing has to be complete to start a conversation. The list shows what a review works from, so you can see where the gaps are.

Early stage

Start with a conversation rather than a quotation. The dimensions and use are usually enough for a first discussion.

0 of 16 inputs ticked. A high score does not produce a quotation on its own: technical scope, commercial terms and delivery expectations are still reviewed manually.

Missing key inputs

These decide the scope

  • Project country and site location. Location sets the wind and snow assumptions and the transport route.
  • Building use (warehouse, workshop, plant, cold store). Intended use drives the loading assumptions, not just the footprint.
  • Overall length, width and eave height. Dimensions give the review its first order of magnitude.
  • Required clear span and bay spacing. Span is the input that changes steel weight per square metre the most.
  • Design loads or the code the project follows. Loads and the applicable standard decide member sizes and connections.
  • Roof and wall system, plus openings. The envelope decides secondary steel, flashings and the interface scope.
  • Surface treatment or coating requirement. Corrosion category and dry film thickness change cost and lead time.
  • Supply scope: structure only or including envelope. A quotation against the wrong scope cannot be compared with another one.
  • Destination port and delivery terms. Port and delivery terms drive packing, container planning and freight.

Also worth preparing

  • Architectural or structural drawings
  • BOQ or member schedule
  • Crane capacity, class and hook height (if any)
  • Special requirements (temperature, fire, seismic)
  • Packing or marking requirements
  • Site unloading equipment and sequence
  • Target delivery window

Context

Why the checklist is shorter than it looks

A steel structure scope review needs three kinds of input: what the building is, what it has to carry, and how it has to reach the site. Everything on the checklist belongs to one of those three, and most of it can be answered approximately for a first review.

Nothing here is a substitute for design work. The checklist exists so that a quotation can be prepared against a defined scope instead of an assumption, which is what makes two quotations comparable at all.
